The word cairn, from the Scottish Gaelic for stone man can bring up images of faith and the purpose of the spiritual journey. Cairn construction is a popular activity in the backcountry. It’s easy to see why people are drawn to these tiny piles of flat stones that are stacked as if they were blocks for children. A hiker suffering from stiff shoulders and black insects buzzing around her ears will attempt to find a stone with the perfect blend of flatness, tilt, width and depth. After a few misses (one too large, another too small) A true skeptic will choose the stone that fits perfectly into place. The second layer of the Cairn is now completed.
Many people don’t realize that cairn building can create negative environmental impacts, especially when done near water sources. When rocks are removed from the edges of the shores of a lake, river or pond, they can disrupt the ecosystem and destroy the microorganisms’ habitats that are the backbone of the food chain. Additionally the rocks could be carried away by erosion to locations where they could inflict harm on humans or wildlife.
For these reasons, the practice of constructing cairns should be avoided in areas where there are rare or endangered mammals, amphibians or reptiles or plants and flowers that require moisture locked under the rocks. If you build a rock cairn on private property, this may violate federal and state laws that protect the natural resources of the land. This could result in fines and arrest.
